Somewhere along the lines we’ve all aspired to be something or someone or both. A future self that meets all the requirements of what society would deem appropriate for that end state. That means carrying ourselves in certain way. Wearing specific clothes. Owning things that signal the perception we want to create. Crafting a persona as a synecdoche of our desired self. A way of performing in hopes of getting to the stage where that performance is required.
I’ve always hated when people say ‘fake it until you make it.’ It assumes we aren’t all faking it in some way, at all times, in many different scenarios. All of us aiming to look the part so society will cast us in the choice role we’ve always wanted. A dream fulfilled. A life made whole. The outward self fine tuned to match our inner striving.
