There’s something curious about our collective conception of entertainment. Somewhere along the way we became convinced that only mindless diversions qualify. That we must shut off our brains and let the entertainment take over. Let it happen to us, instead of being an active participant in it. We’ve come to think of anything that deviates from the norm as an other. Effort is other. Abstraction is other. Thinking is other. Nuance is other.
We’ve reached the point where we think of entertainment and boredom as opposites. A choice we’re always subconsciously making. Even when most of what we think of as entertainment fails to stimulate us in any meaningful way. Maybe we should revisit that dichotomy. Maybe we need to wake from our under-stimulated sleep. Face the world in a new way. Find entertainment in the centers of our brains where we ask ourselves questions and only find incomplete answers. What do I know? Maybe I just want to stimulate a response. Any kind of response.
